GEBRIEF HISTORY OF OUR COLLE

Schools for English and Tamil Education were established by Catholic and Wesleyan missionaries in Kalmunai. St. Mary’s College which was established at the premises of Sacred Heart Church, Kalmunai in 1900, was the pioneer of the Catholic schools in Kalmunai. Apart from this an English Medium school for boys was started by the missionaries in 1938. Reverend Brothers of St. Joseph Society took over these schools and later in the 1950s they named these schools as “Fatima College”.

A Glimpse into the Past

The roots of Carmel Fatima College date back to the early 20th century when Wesleyan Missionaries introduced English-medium education in the Kalmunai area. Their dedication laid the foundation for what would become a legacy of learning. Later, Catholic Missionaries assumed stewardship, and alongside St. Mary's College, they established an English-medium school for boys.

The Birth of Fatima College

In 1938, the Reverend Brothers of St. Joseph's Society took over the school, and it blossomed into Fatima College. These visionary educators, including names like Reverend Brothers C. Chrysostom and S.M. Benjamin, shaped the institution into more than just a center for academics. They fostered sports, created botanical and zoological gardens, and nurtured holistic development.

The Emergence of Carmel Convent

The Apostolic Carmelites Nuns arrived in Sri Lanka in 1922, paving the way for Carmel Convent in Kalmunai in 1928. This marked a significant milestone in bringing quality education to girls in the region. The merger of various English and Tamil medium schools in 1958 resulted in Carmel High School, with Reverend Sister M. Dorothea's visionary leadership setting the tone for holistic development.

The Genesis of Carmel Fatima College

In the 1960s, amid changes in Sri Lanka's educational landscape, a visionary plan emerged to amalgamate Fatima College and Carmel High School. This union, realized in 1976 under Rev. Bro. S.A. Francis's leadership, created a stronger institution, shaping the identity and culture of the newly formed Carmel Fatima College.

Leadership and Transformation

Rev. Bro. S.A.I. Mathew played a pivotal role in reshaping the school's destiny. Under his leadership, Carmel Fatima College achieved National School status in 1993. Infrastructure developments and a conducive learning environment became part of his legacy.

A School for the Future

Rev. Bro. M. Stephen Mathew continued the journey in 1999, embracing modern educational methodologies and technologies. The school's commitment to quality education, holistic development, and character-building remains steadfast, preparing students for academic success and positive societal impact.

Kalmunai Carmel Fatima College's rich history, spanning over a century, is a testament to the enduring power of education and the indomitable spirit of those who have nurtured it. With a dedicated staff and visionary leadership, this institution continues to evolve and shape the future of countless students, carrying forward its legacy of excellence and inspiration. As the school welcomes a new leader, Rev. Bro. S. Emmanuel Reginold, in 2023, its journey towards excellence persists. Carmel Fatima College stands as a beacon of hope, guiding the way for generations to come.
